City officials are warning residents about a telephone scam that is targeting Wilson Energy customers and demanding immediate payment for fraudulent charges.
The city’s customer service office and the Wilson Police Department have both received calls today about the scam. Reportedly, Wilson Energy customers are receiving phones messages to call a tollfree number. When you call the number, the systems identifies it as Wilson Utilities and asks the caller to hold for an “agent.” That person is asking the callers to purchase a pre-paid cash card.
This is not how the City of Wilson operates. All contact about past-due bills or cutoff notices are sent by mail. We never call customers about their accounts.
If you receive a call, hang up. If calls persist, contact our customer service center, 252-399-2200, so that we might assist.
