At Wilson Energy, we deliver electricity and natural gas to our customers safely and efficiently through underground lines. Damaging or disturbing these lines can lead to serious consequences—service disruptions, costly repairs, or even personal injury.

Planning to Dig? Submit a Locate Request First.

Before beginning any project that involves digging, North Carolina law requires you to submit a utility locate request through NC 811 or by calling 811. This free service ensures underground utility lines are clearly marked before you start work.

Examples of Projects That Require a Locate Request:

  • Installing a mailbox

  • Building a deck

  • Planting trees or large shrubs

  • Installing fences (including invisible pet fencing)

  • Home additions*

  • Placing a storage building on your property*

Important: No structures can be built or placed over natural gas pipelines.

How It Works:

Just one request to NC 811 will notify local utilities—including gas, electric, water, sewer, cable, and telephone providers—to mark their underground lines. Request are typically completed within three business days.

Please note: Only publicly owned utility lines will be marked. If you have private lines (e.g., from your meter to your home or garage), you’ll need to hire a private utility locator.
