Tree Trimmer Supervisor

JOB TITLE: TREE TRIMMER SUPERVISOR
JOB SUMMARY:
  This position performs technical and supervisory duties in the trimming and removal of trees in support of the installation, maintenance, and repair of the electric distribution system.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Trims and removes trees to protect city electrical lines; clears right of way for the installation of new lines.
Climbs trees to maintain correct clearance.
Operates a bucket truck to trim, prune, or dismember trees for felling.
Maintains equipment, including bucket truck, saws, ropes, ladders, climbing gear, saddle, pruners, axes, shovels, and safety gear.
Trains personnel in the techniques and use of city safety equipment.
Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of the equipment, materials, principles and practices used in the safe trimming and removal of trees.
Knowledge of aerial lift operations.
Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
Skill in the use of hydraulic saw, chain saw, band saw, weight lines and other equipment used in the pruning and removal of trees.
Skill in climbing trees and working at precarious positions.
Skill in the operation of a bucket truck and crane.
Skill in assigning and supervising the work of subordinates.
Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Electric Distribution Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in the pruning and removal of trees. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to trim and remove trees in support of the installation, repair, and maintenance of electric distribution equipment.  Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric utilities.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.  The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders and trees, operates tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather, and may require the use of protective devices.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  This position has direct supervision over Tree Trimmers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
