Mayor urges people to shop in Wilson this season
As people begin to plan their holiday gift lists, Wilson Mayor Bruce Rose hopes they will spend more of their money in their hometown, especially with locally owned businesses.
“Wilson has great local businesses, craftspeople, restaurants and others that we ought to support year-round, but we especially want people to consider the power of their shopping dollars during the holiday season,” said Mayor Rose. “We will all have a merrier Christmas if your gift dollars stay in our community.”
Mayor Rose has issued a proclamation for “Small Business Holiday Focus,” which he presented last week to small business owners in Historic Downtown Wilson.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving has been promoted since 2010 as Small Business Saturday. Some credit card companies give shoppers discounts or rewards for patronizing locally owned businesses.
Small businesses nationwide have more than three times the impact on the local economy compared to the big-box stores and represent more than 99 percent of American companies that create two-thirds of all new jobs, according to Melissa Evans, director of the Small Business Center (SBC) at Wilson Community College.
Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy, she said. “When we recognize that these owners are likely to give back to the community, we realize that they are often the folks who sponsor the little league teams, support our children’s schools, serve on community development boards, participate in civic leadership, contribute to nonprofits, and so much more.”
These businesses “exist in our community 365 days a year, so recognizing them on only Small Business Saturday annually seems like such a small tribute,” Mrs. Evans said. “Along with other community partners, including Historic Downtown Wilson, the SBC encourages you to do more for these businesses year-round.”
She suggested not only shopping locally but support these businesses online and in social media. Search online for local stores, services, restaurants, dance studios, veterinarian, etc., and then write a positive review on their Google Map or Facebook page. Sharing specific details about how special these businesses are may entice others to spend their dollars in Wilson too.
Local sales also create tax revenue for local governments. Your holiday purchase help support local emergency services, libraries, parks, public transportation, and public safety.
