Please join us for the annual Veterans Day service on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in the plaza in front of the Wilson County Courthouse.

 

The program will feature remarks from Theresa Mathis, of the City of Wilson’s Human Relations Office. Mathis has served the city for 20 years, supporting many community events and advising the Wilson Youth Council. Her son, Duncan Mathis, a U.S. Marine who was wounded in Afghanistan, spoke at the commission’s 2019 Memorial Day ceremony.

The ceremony will include performances by the New Hope Elementary School Chorus, directed by Sara Bennington, and the National Anthem sung by Tynia Pender of the Wilson Chapel FWBC Youth Choir. The Junior ROTCs from Beddingfield, Hunt, and Fike high schools will participate in the flag ceremonies.
 
Additional highlights include a welcome from Councilmember Logan Liles, a POW/MIA remembrance, wreath placement in honor of Wilson County’s fallen service members, and prayers from Chaplain James A. Faison.
 
The event will conclude with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to stay for a free hot dog lunch — tickets will be distributed at the event.

In the case of rain, the ceremony will move to City Hall council chambers.
