Monday, June 24, 2013
Registration is now open for the Youth Citizens Academy being hosted by the City of Wilson Human Relations office. The academy will be held the week of July 15-19. Twenty slots will be open to rising 9th ? 12th graders. The academy will be held daily beginning at 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Charles W. Pittman III Operations Center at 1800 Herring Avenue. Lunch will be provided.
The Youth Citizens Academy will give students the opportunity to gain insight into the operations of local government. They will be able to observe some of the day-to-day activities within the City of Wilson. There will be presentations from each department, hands-on activities and interactions, and tours of various city facilities.
The goal of the academy is to give students the opportunity to begin considering career choices and hopefully start the process of developing future leaders in Wilson.
"Students will have the advantage of taking an inside look at how our government operates. We are hoping this will be a springboard for creating interest in their community and becoming an active participant in the city through volunteering, running for office, or working in government when they become adults," said Human Relations Director Renee Smith.
Students interested in attending should call Kim Jenkins in the Human Relations office at 252-399-2308.
