Wilson firefighters are finalist for international honor
Thursday, August 19, 2010
Wilson Fire/Rescue Services’ efforts to teach children, older adults and the special needs community how to prevent injuries or worse in the home will receive international recognition later this month.
Wilson’s Fire and Life Safety Adventure House has been named one of seven finalists for the Service Award for Excellence, cosponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and U.S. Safety Fire Technologies.
Wilson firefighters have been invited to be recognized at the IAFC’s annual conference, which will be Aug. 24-28 in Chicago, during which the award winner will be announced.
This is the second time in recent years Wilson Fire/Rescue has competed for the award. The department was also chosen a finalist in 2007 for its F.I.R.E.S. Fire Inspection training software project.
The Service Award for Excellence recognizes innovation and achievement in managing resources to reduce the loss of life and property from fire and other emergencies. Award-winning programs have focused on such issues as fire prevention, emergency preparedness and management, drowning prevention, arson, EMS, fire-victim assistance, recruitment, public relations, community outreach and training.
Seven finalists are selected from all the nominations submitted during the first half of the calendar year. Each program selected as a finalist receives a check for $500. The grand prize winner is selected by the former presidents of the IAFC and receives a check for $2,000.
