Dispose of drugs safely in April
Tuesday, March 09, 2010
Local law enforcement officers hope to conduct a spring cleaning in April that will get potentially dangerous and addictive drugs out of medicine cabinets and off the streets.
The Wilson Police Department is teaming with other agencies to hold a Drug Drop-Off Day, which will be Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
During that time, residents may bring any unused or out-of-date prescription drugs, as well as any illegal drugs, to four locations:
- Contentnea Volunteer Fire Department, 4146 N.C. 42 West.
- Wal-Mart, 2500 Forest Hills Road.
- Food Lion, 3711 Peppermill Road.
- Food Lion, 2021 Lipscomb Road.
Any drug can be surrendered with no fear of penalty during this event.
A drug collection day in October 2009 gathered more than 15,000 doses of a variety of prescription medications.
Officials say it is not wise to flush drugs or putting them down the drain because they then might affect water treatment centers. Items brought to the drop-off sites will be disposed of in a safe manner.
Other sponsors include the Wilson County Substance Abuse Coaltion, Wilson County Sheriff's Office, DEA, Wilson County EMS and volunteer fire departments.
