Greenlight Numbers Ahead of Schedule

Friday, January 16, 2009

The City of Wilson’s fiber optic network, marketed as Greenlight, is seeing higher subscription numbers than expected. The network was completed a full year ahead of schedule and is now available to everyone in the city limits.

“The business plan was based on the rate of signups in several of other cities that have also built networks,” said Dathan Shows, Assistant City Manager. “The numbers we’re seeing show that the demand for faster speeds and local customer service in Wilson were even higher than expected.”

The all fiber optic network is now available to every home in Wilson. At this point, a total of 1,840 households have signed up for a combination of cable, Internet and telephone services. That’s a total penetration of 9.66%. The business plan had anticipated that around 1,400 households would have signed by now.

Wilson citizens are seeing many benefits to their local ownership. For instance, after requests from members that the Noggin network be added to Greenlight’s basic tier, city staff re-negotiated with the network and moved it to basic.

The business community is also benefiting. At this point, more than 110 businesses have signed up for service.

“The thing I’m most excited about is the retention rate,” said Shows. “At this point, 97.73% of our overall members have stayed with us. That’s far ahead of the industry standard. Our members are enjoying superior quality products, competitive prices and local customer service.”

Cable, Internet and Phone packages start at $99.95 a month. Visit GreenlightNC.com for more information
