Harwood headlines First Friday in August
Thursday, July 17, 2014
First Friday on the Lawn returns in August with a night celebrating both county music and local law enforcement.
First Friday on the Lawn will be Friday, Aug. 2, 6-9 p.m., in front of the Wilson County Public Library, 249 W. Nash St. The family event is free and open to the public.
Each month First Friday has a different theme. This month is Country Music and the headlining act will be Darrell Harwood and the Cool Water Band.
Darrell Harwood is a native of China Grove, N.C., and a graduate of South Rowan High School. His father led the original Cool Water Band during the 1970s and Darrell would occasionally perform with the group as a youngster. But he began working as an electrician, married his wife, Karen, and had two daughters, Tayler and Sarrah.
In 2009, he sang in a benefit concert for his brother-in-law. The response encouraged Darrell to form a new Cool Water Band, which performs at many community and charitable events.

First Friday will also include the local celebration of National Night Out, which supports the efforts of the Wilson Police Department and other law enforcement agencies to combat crime. There will be information about crime prevent, police vehicles on display, and activities involving police officers.
There will be other entertainment, children's activities, community information, food and drink for sale, and other things to do. Attendees are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs. In case of rain, the event will be relocated to the Boykin Center.
The Human Relations Office and Human Relations Commission sponsor the annual First Fridays on the Lawn concert series to celebrate “Diversity through Music.” The free public concerts, typically held on the first Fridays of July-October, bring together neighbors using music as the bridge builder. The event often includes live bands, family friendly activities, community booths and performances by local dance studios.
