JOB SUMMARY: The position performs responsible skilled work in the trimming and removal of trees in support of the installation, maintenance , and repair of the electric distribution system.
Oversees field operations of tree trimming crews; 
Performs necessary trimming and pruning to eliminate hazards and interference to utility easements; 
Removes dead, broken and overhanging branches and tree tops using a variety of tools;  Participates in the care of trees; 
Operates an aerial bucket as necessary to trim, prune or dismember trees for felling; 
Uses all tools of the trade, including ladders, ropes, power chain saws, band saws, axes, shovels, block and tackle; 
Keeps such tools sharp and in good repair; 
Drives a truck and operates allied automotive equipment in connection with work; 
Trims and digs out protruding tree roots; 
Keeps records and makes written reports as required;
Performs related tasks as required.
Thorough knowledge of tree trimming methods; 
Thorough knowledge of tree surgery techniques; 
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work; 
Ability to train and supervise subordinate tree trimmers; 
Ability to operate a truck with a hydraulic boom; 
Skill in the use and care of ropes, climber hooks, riggings and tools commonly used in tree trimming and felling operations; 
Ability to climb trees and to work effectively in precarious positions at considerable heights above the ground for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather and working conditions; 
Ability to deal courteously with the public.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Lead Tree Trimmer assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in the pruning and removal of trees. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is the trimming  and removal of trees in support of the installation, repair, and maintenance of electric distribution equipment.  Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric utilities.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of force up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently or 10 pounds constantly.  Must be able to perform the physical activities of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking and hearing.  The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform job functions.  The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and may be subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  Supervision may be exercised over subordinate tree trimmers.
Any combination and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in working at heights and in the general care, pruning and removal of trees around high voltage electric lines, including some supervisory experience.
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of North Carolina within six months of employment.  Must be able to meet Department of Transportation’s physical requirements.
