JOB TITLE:  ARBORICULTURIST
JOB SUMMARY: This position performs technical and supervisory duties in landscaping, tree removal and installation, turf maintenance, and other related arborculture functions.
MAJOR DUTIES:
 Surveys city of appropriate location of trees; determines varieties of trees to be planted; notifies landowners of intent to plant trees; supervises and participates in the planting of trees.
Inspects trees in city parks and rights-of-way for problems; responds to citizens’ inquiries and concerns concerning tree problems.
Supervises and participates in the planting of flower beds; designs beds and prepare for planting.
Supervises and participates in the landscaping of city parking lots and other public areas.
Applies herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals.
Prunes shrubs and landscaping around City Operations Center, Main Patrol Station, Recreation Department, and parking lots.
Prepares new rose garden beds; plants roses; prunes plants.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of the standards, materials, techniques, and equipment used in the planting and care of trees.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal arborculture.
Knowledge of landscaping principles and practices.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Skill in the application of herbicide and pesticide.
Skill in the design and maintenance of flower beds.
Skill in the operation of a backhoe, power hedge trimmers, and chemical sprayer.
Skill in the supervision of personnel.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Assistant Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, Parks and Recreation Policy Manual, North Carolina pesticide laws, city tree ordinances, and relevant city, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. 
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied supervisory and technical duties.  The need to perform multiple tasks at the same time contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform arboricultural duties. Successful performance helps ensure the attractiveness of city property.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, members of the Parking Lot, Rose Garden, and Appearance Commissions, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.  The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals, and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, gloves, or goggles.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  The position has functional supervision over assigned personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
