Planning Technician

Position Number: 2415
JOB TITLE: PLANNING TECHNICIAN
MAJOR DUTIES:
Assists planners in enforcing the land use related ordinances.
Reviews building and sign permit applications for compliance with zoning ordinances.
Processes home and temporary use permits.
Enforces the zoning code, floodplain ordinance, and other land use regulatory methods.
Assists in the interpretation of zoning codes and related regulations.
Prepares technical studies and reports for staff, Boards and Commissions.
Assists in the development of analyses and recommendations for current physical, social and economic planning projects.
Conducts site inspections and measurements for zoning compliance.
Performs graphic and drafting duties in updating zoning and street maps.
Identifies zoning violations and responds to citizen inquiries.
Responds to inquiries from developers and citizens regarding planning, zoning, subdivision, and land development.
Prepares legal notices and ads.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local planning.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and land use controls;
Knowledge of and skill in the use of computers and planning related applications, including
Skill in the use of other modern office equipment.
Skill in drafting and mapping techniques.
Skill in blueprints, and plot plan reading;
Skill in quantitative methods, research techniques, and report writing.
Skill in developing and organizing research materials and data.
Ability to organize facts and present them clearly and concisely in written, oral and graphic form.
Ability to effectively work with other employees and the public.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, zoning ordinances, and relevant city, state, and federal laws, and regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical and paraprofessional duties. Frequent changes in codes and regulations contribute to the complexity of the work.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, builders and contractors, property owners, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a bachelor's degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, , usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of
