JOB TITLE: Mail Clerk
JOB SUMMARY: This position receives, sorts, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Picks up mail at post office.
Sorts, bundles, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail into appropriate boxes.
Delivers mail to departments and personnel.
Operates a postage meter machine; sells postage stamps.
Receives packages from delivery services; calls employees for pick up.
Assists with the printing of letterhead, business cards, inserts, and other materials.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of United States Postal Service regulations related to metering mail.
Knowledge of the functions of black and white and color copiers.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Skill in the operation of a postage meter.
Skill in the operation of copy machines.
Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, USPS regulations, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the processing of mail.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to process incoming and outgoing mail for the City of Wilson. Successful performance results in the efficient provision of mail services.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, postal workers, and delivery personnel.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, and must distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a stockroom or warehouse. The employee may be exposed to noise and machinery with moving parts. The work is also performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
