JOB TITLE: Server Administrator
JOB SUMMARY: This position performs administrative and technical duties in support of Microsoft operating system environment servers and related software.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Sets up and supports Microsoft operating system environment servers, including design and administration of Active Directory services.
Sets up Microsoft Exchange server and sets up email accounts as needed.
Supports Microsoft IIS web servers.
Administers and supports Microsoft SQL database servers.
Backs up server data on a daily basis.
Installs and supports computer hardware and software programs.
Insist in the installation of CAT5 and fiber optic cable.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of Microsoft server NT 4.0 plus, Microsoft Exchange 2000, IIS 4.0 plus Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft SQL 7.0 plus, and Microsoft operating systems 98, NT 4, and 2000 plus.
Knowledge of computer networking.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Skill in the effective communication with technical and non-technical personnel.
Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
Skill in establishing effective working relationships.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Network Administrator assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures and state, local and federal laws and regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied technical duties. The unique nature of each problem contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the administration of the computer network. Success in this position ensures the efficient operation of information technology.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
