Warehouse Technician I

Position Number: 1506

JOB TITLE:  WAREHOUSE TECHNICIAN I
JOB SUMMARY:  This position performs technical duties in the storage, inventory, and issuance of equipment, materials and supplies.  An incumbent in this position may be designated as Warehouse Technician II.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Issues supplies and materials for city employees at the warehouse counter.
Receives deliveries for the warehouse and other city departments; verifies material with packing slip and purchase order.
Enters warehouse invoices into the computer.
Notifies divisions concerning deliveries or delivers materials to division.
Monitors materials by inventory control methods daily, weekly, and monthly; inventories transformers and poles weekly; stocks shelves; assists with year end physical inventory.
Packs and ships freight; balances UPS shipping report monthly.
Performs basic housekeeping and maintenance of warehouse.
Operates forklift to load or unload trucks.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of modern office equipment such as computers, and fax machines.
Knowledge of inventory control techniques and policies.
Skill in operating office equipment such as a computer and calculator.
Skill in the operation of a forklift.
Skill in the operation of electronic barcode scanning equipment.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Purchasing Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with
instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines standard safety procedures, city and department policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. 
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related technical duties in the operation of a warehouse. 
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to assist in the storage, inventory, and issuance of materials for the city.  Successful performance ensures the availability of necessary tools, equipment, and supplies and contributes to the overall functioning of the city government.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and vendors.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.  The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, or warehouse.  The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.  The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather and may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
