JOB TITLE: ComputeR Operator
JOB SUMMARY: This position performs computer operations duties in support of information technology services. An incumbent in this position may be designated as Senior Computer Operator.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Monitors and supervises the operation of the computer system.
Answers help desk calls; refers callers to appropriate personnel.
Balances and corrects any remittance errors.
Prints and distributes printouts and documents.
Prints payroll checks for all city departments; transmit direct deposits to bank.
Records all IBM maintenance bills; enters requisitions.
Maintains instruction manuals.
Maintains log of tape library.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of AS/400 operations and software applications.
Knowledge of pc hardware and software.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Knowledge of the remittance system.
Skill in the providing customer services.
Skill in the operation of an IBM 6252 band printer.
Skill in direct deposits, drafts and other financial transmission procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related computer operations duties.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is assist end users and to perform other computer operations. Successful performance results in the efficient response to end user problems and in the efficiency of other department operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, bank personnel, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office or computer room. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
