The Position
Performs specialized and complex technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the city's fiber optic communications network. This position will also perform duties related to the maintenance of the city's buildings as required to support the Facility Services Department. This position reports to the OSP Engineer. Position is subject to call outs to meet service requirements, and on call duty which may include weekends and holidays.

The Selection Process
Our process begins with a complete evaluation of the applications submitted for employment. A limited number of persons determined to be most qualified, as reflected by the contents of their applications, will be invited to a personal interview. The interview will cover the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of the vacant position. The applicant determined to best fit the needs of the vacant position will be given a careful reference work background review along with a complete medical examination, which includes a drug test.

How to Compete in the Process
Applicant must have knowledge of: standards, techniques, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of OSP fiber optic equipment; PON networks and fiber optic transmissions; relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations; city and departmental policies. Must have knowledge in taking, and understanding loss measures. Applicant must have demonstrated the ability to operate specialized maintenance, test, and fusion splicing equipment; interpret test results; communicate effectively orally and in writing in order to document all splicing information and convey to appropriate personnel; and read as well as interpret engineering drawings for fiber optic networks. Must have also demonstrated the ability to work with the public, and customers in home and business settings. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and at least two years experience in working with fiber optic construction and splicing and/or facility maintenance will be accepted. Climbing and experience safely working around high voltage power preferred. A valid Drivers License is required.
