C. Bruce Rose, MayorBefore the people of Wilson elected him to office, Mayor Bruce Rose served for 30 years with the Wilson Fire Department, seven of which he served as Fire Chief. He attended fire schools throughout North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, including the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He is a graduate of the Executive Development Course of Chief Fire Officers in Emmitsburg. Mayor Rose is a life member of the NC Association of Fire Chiefs and served on the Board of Directors for four years. He is also a life member of the NC Association of Retired Fire Chiefs and served an appointment by Governor James B. Hunt to the NC Fire Commission. Mayor Rose received the 1999 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. He received an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Fire Science Technology from Wilson Technical Community College. He served in the US Army for two years. He is also a graduate of Charles I. Coon High School. Rose is a lifetime member of Wilson First Pentecostal Holiness Church where he has served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Elected in 1992, Mayor Rose is currently serving his fourth term. He and his wife, Becky Davis Rose, are active in community and church functions throughout the city. |

A. P. Coleman - Council District 1Councilman Coleman was elected to City Council in 1975 and served as Mayor Pro-Tem for 16 years. Before retiring a few years ago, Mr. Coleman worked as a Cooperative Extension Agent in Wilson County. Prior to his service there, he taught school in Greene and Lenoir Counties. Councilman Coleman received his M.S. degree in Adult Education from NC State University in Raleigh and his Bachelor of Science from NC A&T in Greensboro. Recently, he was named to the Board of Trustees for the NC Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System by Governor Mike Easley. He has served on numerous boards during his political career, including a term as President of the NC League of Municipalities in 1991-1992. In 1996, he was named Wilson’s Distinguished Citizen by the Wilson Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Coleman has three grown children. |

Gwen C. Burton - Council District 2Councilwoman Burton earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science at NC A&T State University in Greensboro before attending law school at NC Central University in Durham. She moved to Wilson in 1975. She taught school and was a volunteer at Opportunity Industrialization Commission, a local non-profit group. Councilwoman Burton was the first African-American woman elected to City Council in 1983. She interned with Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm of New York and for Judge Henry Frye, former Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court. |

Bill Blackman, IV - Council District 3Councilman Blackman is a native of Wilson County. He is a graduate of the Institute of Insurance in Chapel Hill. He served as president of the Wilson County Fire & Casualty Insurance Agents Association. He is a member of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce. Councilman Blackman served two terms as chairman of the Agri-Business Committee. He has participated in the Philip Morris Leadership Program and served on the Wilson Planning Board for 11 years. He is married with three children. Councilman Blackman was elected to City Council in 2002. |

James M. Johnson, III - Council District 4Councilman Johnson is currently Mayor Pro-Tem. He is a Wilson native and a 1989 graduate of Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He is a general agent in the family insurance firm. Councilman Johnson is a past president of Wilson Association of Life Underwriters, Trustee of Wilson Technical Community College, and a member of the Community and Economic Development Committee of the NC League of Municipalities. He is active in many local, regional, state, and national organizations. Mr. Johnson is also a graduate of Hunt High School. |

Donald I. Evans - Council District 5Councilman Evans has called our area home since 1955. He is President and Co-Owner of Evans Machinery & Metal Fabrication, Inc. He is a member of Evansdale United Methodist Church where he serves as a Lay Leader, Board of Trustee member, and Building Committee Chairman. Mr. Evans served as a county commissioner for four years. He is a Trustee of Wilson Technical Community College, Board member of RBC Centura Bank, Board member of the Wilson Country Club, Board member of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Wilson Industrial Management Council. He is married and has two children. Mr. Evans is a 1965 graduate of Fike High School. |

Bob Thaxton - Council District 6Councilman Thaxton is a retired Soldier who served in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the Special Forces. A 1951 graduate of Oak Ridge Military Institute, Mr. Thaxton enrolled at Wake Forest University before signing up for military service. He served in the US Army for 21 years, 10 years of which he served as a helicopter pilot. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer Three in 1973. After retiring, he became District Supervisor of Veteran Affairs based in Wilson. He retired again in 1995. Mr. Thaxton is a native of Norlina. |

Doris H. Jones - Council District 7Councilwoman Jones was a public school teacher for 43 1/2 years in Rocky Mount, Conetoe and Nash County. The life-long educator also served the Wilson (Branch) chapter of the NAACP for six years. She holds a graduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and an undergraduate degree from Virginia State University. She has also studied at NC State, Ohio State and East Carolina University. Before she was elected to Council in 2005, Mrs. Jones served on numerous city boards, including Planning and Zoning and the US 301 Task Force. |
