Hispanic Outreach

The Wilson Police Department Hispanic Outreach Program is designed to help and build a bridge of trust between Police Officers and the Hispanic Community as well as assisting the Hispanic residents of the City of Wilson to overcome the language barrier between Spanish and English.  The program was developed in 1999 as the Hispanic population started to grow in the City of Wilson.

While interacting with the Hispanic Community, Officers heard of numerous unreported crimes against Hispanics.  The Hispanic Outreach Program consists of both Spanish speaking sworn and non-sworn personnel of the Wilson Police Department.

Over the last four years, the members of the Wilson Police Department Hispanic Outreach Program have attempted to educate the Hispanic community by sharing information regarding North Carolina laws, domestic violence, North Carolina driver’s licensing requirements, educational opportunities, crime prevention, reporting crimes and the day to day operations of the City of Wilson Police Department and other City of Wilson departments.  These events also included other agency assistance such as representatives from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Department of Motor Vehicles, Emergency Medical Services, City of Wilson Fire Department, Wilson Technical Community College; Wilson County Schools, Wilson County Health Department, Wesley Shelter, Wilson County Sheriff’s Department and several businesses within the City of Wilson who contributed their time and resources to make the events possible.

The events that have been held over the past four years have proven to be helpful to the Hispanic Community.  More and more Hispanics are coming to the police department to get assistance whether it is of a criminal nature or not.
