Personnel

Lieutenant Thomas P. Hopkins is District Commander of the South District.  He was born in and lived in Newport News, Virginia, but lived most of his life in Wilson, North Carolina.   Lt. Hopkins holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Justice Studies from NC Wesleyan College.  He also holds a Masters Degree in Criminology with a concentration in Law from Indiana State University.  Lt. Hopkins is an Administrative Officers Management Program (AOMP) Graduate from NC State University and a graduate from the Senior Management Program at Coastal Plains Law Enforcement Training Center.  He is currently pursuing a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice from Capella University.  Lt. Hopkins is a NC General and Specialized instructor in Physical Fitness, Firearms, and First Responder.  He also serves as an Adjunct Instructor with NC Wesleyan College, Shaw University, and Wilson Community College.

 

Lt. Hopkins initial assignment was in the Uniformed Patrol Division in 1995.  In 1996, he was transferred to the Detective Division were he worked as a Detective in Vice & Narcotics.  In 1999, Lt. Hopkins was transferred to the Professional Standards Division were he served as the department's Hiring and Recruitment Coordinator.  In 2003, he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the Uniformed Patrol Division where he supervised a patrol team.  In February 2006, Lt. Hopkins was promoted to Lieutenant and now serves as South District Commander.  Lt. Hopkins serves on the department's Special Response Team and Honor Guard.

 

Lt. Hopkins is married and has three wonderful children. Lt Hopkins is a member of the Beta Beta Beta Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc and currently holds the office of Assistant Keeper of Record and Seals.  He also enjoys riding his motorcycle (“Busa”) on sunny days and spending time with his family.  Favorite sports are football and wrestling.  He also enjoys the social connection and closeness of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity with each other and other Sororities and Fraternities.  He helps with numerous projects with the Fraternity, like tutoring kids after school, the Charles R Drew Blood Drive, the Talent Hunt, and Scholarship Program.
