Comprehensive Plan

Comprehensive Plan Adopted by City Council

At their April 16, 2010 meeting, the City Council unanimously adopted Wilson ~ Growing Together: The 2030 Comprehensive Plan. After an 18-month process involving many public meetings and much input from a cross section of the Wilson community, the City now has a long-range Plan that will provide guidance to ensure that Wilson develops in a way that reflects the visions of the many people who participated in its development.

The Comprehensive Plan will enhance our quality of life by emphasizing Downtown revitalization and Center City neighborhood preservation and improvement, economic opportunity across the City, a transportation system that serves everyone’s needs, development of parks and recreation facilities for people of all ages, and the protection of our natural resources and environmental quality. This important “road map” for the future will serve as the community’s guide for a wide range of decisions concerning land use, development, design, and public investment priorities.

We sincerely appreciate all who were involved and invite everyone to view the Adopted Plan.

Draft Comprehensive Plan Now Available

After 18 months and many public meetings and input from a variety of individuals and groups around the City, the draft Comprehensive Plan is ready for your review and comment. We have provided it to you in sections since it would take a long time to print and entire 250-page documents, plus we thought there may be certain sections that you are more interested in reading in depth than others.

This is the version of the Plan that will go to the City Council for a formal public hearing on Apr 15. If you have questions about anything in the document, please get in touch with us and we will provide answers. There will be a Draft Plan Q&A on Tuesday, April 6 from 5:00-6:30 in the Council Chambers prior to the regular Planning Board meeting, and we invite you to get your questions answered then.

If you have suggested changes/additions, please send those to us in writing by Apr 6 so we can include them in the Draft Plan Comments we will provide to Council prior to Apr 15. You may contact me at dboswell@wilsonnc.org or 399.2214.

We appreciate all who participated in creating this 20-year Plan for our City - this is the product of your input and your vision for the future of Wilson. We encourage you to attend the Apr 15 public hearing and voice your support for the Plan.

Action Plan Available for Public Review

This Action Plan includes more than 200 policies for the City of Wilson to address. While each of these policies is important for acheiving the vision of becoming "One Wilson Growing Together," it is critical to set priorities among all the action strategies. These priorities will lay the groundwork for developing future annual work plans for the City and help with organizing and prioritizing future implementation efforts.

A Day in the Life of Wilson
Photo Contest Winners Announced

From September 1 - November 15 a Citywide Photo Contest was held to continue to get the public involved in the 2030 Comprehensive Plan process. The City was looking for photos that display the spirit and environment that is Wilson. The contest encouraged people to get out and see what the City has to offer with a goal being to highlight the beauty of everyday life in Wilson.

There were 27 photographs entered into the Contest by 13 citizens. These pictures represented a range of images from people to landscapes to sculpture to buildings - all part of what makes our City a great place to live, work, and recreate. A panel of five judges selected the winning photographs. The winners and their photos are:

Adult - Gold (1st Place) - Tracey Mooring

Silver (2nd Place) - Bill Colon

Bronze (3rd Place) - Tom Corbett

Youth - Gold (1st Place) - Austin Williams

The four winning photographs will be used in prominent locations in the City's Comprehensive Plan document. All photos submitted have the potential to become part of the Comprehensive Plan or City documents, posters, and websites. Prizes for the winners have been provided by the Arts Council of Wilson and the City's Parks and Recreation Department.

New Draft Documents for Review and Comment

Three new draft Comprehensive Plan documents are now ready for public review and comment - the Table of Contents, the Plan Framework, and the Future Growth and Land Use Report.

The draft Table of Contents is the proposed outline for the Wilson 2030 Comprehensive Plan. It is suggested that the Plan document will be divided into 5 parts with a total of 16 chapters.

The draft Plan Framework provides the structure for the Plan and the foundation for future action. It includes several components that are inter-related and build upon each other:  the community vision, goals, policies, and strategic actions. These components will be included in Chapters 4-12 of the Plan (see draft Table of Contents).

The draft Growth and Future Land Use Report outlines the process undertaken to evaluate and prepare the growth, service areas, and future land use maps for the City. This portion of the Comprehensive Plan will address the most appropriate location and type of development that should occur in the future.

Please review these draft documents and provide comments by December 18. Your comments will be used to refine these documents for inclusion in the draft Comprehensive Plan. Please provide comments to:
