About the City Manager
Grant Goings has served as City Manager of The City of Wilson since January of 2005. Prior experience includes serving as City Manager for the City of Shelby, N.C., Town Manager for the Town of Elkin, N.C., and Town Administrator for the Town of Bethel, N.C.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Appalachian State University with a concentration in City and County Management and a minor in Urban and Regional Planning. He is a graduate of the Public Executive Leadership Academy of the School of Government at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as the Municipal Administration Program.
Mr. Goings is a member of International City Management Association and the North Carolina City/County Managers’ Association, where he currently serves as chair of the Retirement System Committee. He is a member and Past President of the Appalachian State University Local Government Alumni Association, and has been a guest lecturer with the MPA program.
Currently, Mr. Goings serves on many state and local boards including the United Way of Wilson County, the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, Electricities of North Carolina, Wilson County Properties, and the Wilson Economic Development Council. He was also a leader in the development of “Wilson 20/20 Vision”, a community-wide strategic planning initiative, where he serves on the Management Committee and Board of Directors. He has served as a Cub Scout leader and participates in autism awareness training for North Carolina educators.
He is married and the father of three sons.
