Located on Rock Ridge School Road off Highway 581 on State Road 1142. (Wilkerson Crossroads). Approximately 10 miles from downtown Wilson.
Buckhorn Lake has approximately seven billion gallons of water stored for the City of Wilson use. The lake covers over 2300 acres of land and provides a 30 million gallons per day (mdg) safe yield of water supply. The dam is constructed of roller compacted concrete and is the first of its kind in the State of North Carolina. The dam is over one-half mile long with a 430 ft spillway.
The pool elevation is 148 ft and the City has acquired property to the 159 ft elevation.
Total cost of construction, land and addressing environmental concerns was $45 million dollars. Buckhorn Dam was completed in 2000.
Boating and skiing allowed, as well as the use of personal watercrafts. Boat Permits available onsite at boat ramp. (See Fees Below).
Personal water crafts must go in counterclockwise path from the ramp until passed the last buoy. Stay minimum 100 ft from the shore, boats, piers and other personal watercraft. No swimming or wading allowed.
Fishing is allowed on boat, banks or piers.
Picnic Shelter and tables available on a first come first serve basis. Reservations allowed and can be made prior to use for a $30.00 Wilson city resident fee or $45.00 non-resident fee for a 4 hour period. Call (252) 399-2266.
