The Stormwater Management Division is comprised of four sections.  Each section is responsible for specific tasks related to stormwater management.

Stormwater Administration is the primary point of contact for customers requesting stormwater information, posing billing questions, newsletters, and GIS data that locates and maps stormwater structures in the City’s jurisdiction.

Water Quality focuses on water quality in the City of Wilson and includes collecting and analyzing surface water quality samples for contaminants, locating and eliminating illicit discharges, implementing engineering practices to improve the quality of stormwater runoff, and educating citizens on pollution issues challenging the City.  The Water Quality Section is also responsible for plan review of new development from preliminary stage to permit issuance for compliance Neuse River Buffer, nitrogen loading, and peak runoff control regulations.

Stormwater Maintenance is comprised of a crew in the Water Resources Department that is responsible for reducing water quantity concerns and water quality problems. The crew removes flow-obstructing debris from open drainage channels and repairs and stabilizes eroding slopes.  The crew also performs maintenance to the enclosed drainage system consisting of various types and sizes of storm drainage pipe.  The City has a Vactor truck that is utilized in performing systematic maintenance on the City’s 5800 catch basins and 107 miles of stormsewer pipes. Major projects are routinely completed to provide adequate water flow through the City.

Erosion Control enforces the City’s Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Ordinance as it pertains to new construction for commercial and residential that disturbs one acre or greater.

The Engineering Services Department’s Stormwater Management Division administers the City of Wilson’s Stormwater Utility Program.  It is the policy of the City of Wilson that all developed land within the City Limits has adequate stormwater facilities and controls to ensure the protection and safety of life and property.

Stormwater management is a state and federally mandated program requiring the City to reduce pollution in Wilson’s waterways by providing stormwater drainage through an efficient system that disperses stormwater quickly into our streams and waterways in an environmentally friendly way.  The program is entirely funded by stormwater fees based on the total amount of impervious surface (e.g. buildings, driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.) on properties in Wilson.
