Stormwater Management
In March 2001, the State of North Carolina mandated that 15 local governments within the Neuse River Basin, including the City of Wilson, implement an unfunded stormwater management program. The program was required to include, but not be limited to, the following four components:
- New development review and approval
- Illegal discharge prevention, identification and removal
- Retrofit location identification
- Public education
- Stormwater Newsletter - Vol 1, Issue 1
In addition to the four State mandated components of the Stormwater Management Program, the City operates a crew of eight employees designated for maintenance of the stormwater drainage system. The activities of the crew reduce water quantity concerns and water quality problems. The crew removes flow-obstructing debris from open drainage channels and repairs and stabilizes eroding slopes. A stormsewer debris-removal truck is also used to perform systematic maintenance on the City's 5800 catch basins and 107 miles of stormsewer pipes.
